Col 2:6–7 Bible Study

Col 2:6–7
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

Background

Paul writes to a church being pulled in different directions. Philosophies, traditions, spiritual add ons. Noise. Confusion. Pressure. He does not tell them to find something new. He tells them to stay anchored in what they already received.

Exegetical

The phrase “received” translates the Greek paralambanō, meaning to receive or accept something handed down. It carries the idea of authoritative tradition. They did not invent Christ. They received Him.
“Rooted” comes from rhizoō, a perfect passive participle. It implies something already planted with continuing results. The roots are already in the soil.
“Built up” translates epoikodomeō, present passive, ongoing construction. God is still building.
“Strengthened” from the greek bebaioumenoi, meaning to confirm or establish firmly. Not shaky. Confirmed. Secured.

Hermeneutical Observation

Spiritual maturity is not about chasing new insight. It is about continuing in what is already true. The Christian life moves forward by staying grounded. The paradox is simple. Growth happens by remaining.

Application

You received Christ by faith. You do not outgrow that.
You were planted. You are still being built.
Monday pressure does not uproot what God has already rooted.
Stay anchored in what you already know is true. Do not chase the waves.

Prayer

Lord, keep my roots deep in You. Guard me from distraction and drift. Build what You have started. Confirm my faith. Let gratitude overflow instead of frustration. Keep me anchored in Christ today. Amen.
