1 John 3:1, Bible study

1 John 3:1

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God, and that is what we are.”

Background
John wrote to believers who were dealing with false teaching, confusion, and division within the church. In the middle of that mess, he brings them back to what is certain: the love of God shown in the identity of His people. John does not point them first to their feelings, their performance, or their circumstances. He points them to the Father’s love and to the unchanging truth that those who are in Christ are truly His children.

Exegetical
The phrase “See what great love” carries the idea of stopping and taking notice of something remarkable, something out of the ordinary. John wants his readers to pause and consider the kind of love God has poured out on them. This is not a weak or distant love. It is a lavish, initiating, personal love.

The result of that love is not merely that believers are treated kindly by God, but that they are actually “called children of God.” Even more powerful, John immediately adds, “and that is what we are.” This is not symbolic language or spiritual flattery. It is a statement of reality. Through faith in Christ, believers have been brought into the family of God. Their identity is grounded in God’s action, not their own effort.

Hermeneutical Observation
This passage reminds us that biblical identity flows from divine grace, not human achievement. In a world that constantly tries to define people by failure, success, status, or approval, Scripture anchors the believer in something far more stable: God’s covenant love in Christ. John’s point is clear, if you belong to Jesus, your deepest identity is settled. You are a child of God.

Application
A lot of people live like spiritual orphans, even while sitting in church. They know the language of faith, but they still think they have to earn God’s approval every day. John cuts straight through that lie. If you are in Christ, you are not trying to become one of God’s children, you already are one.

That truth steadies the heart. It gives peace when the world is noisy, confidence when the enemy accuses, and hope when you feel worn down. You do not have to drift every time life gets rough. You are anchored in the love of the Father. The waves may still hit, but they do not get to rename you. God already has.

Today, live from that identity. Walk with humility, but also with confidence. You are loved, chosen, and claimed by the Father. That is not sentimental religion, that is solid ground.

Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me with a love I could never earn. Thank You that in Christ I am truly Your child. Help me to live today anchored in that truth, not tossed around by fear, doubt, or the opinions of others. Remind me that Your love is steady, strong, and sure. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
